Did you figure this out yet? I have just purchased a 1976 450SL on 07-03-08. It has been sitting for 6 years. It was running and drove, I am told by the elderly prior owner, when he parked it. He parked it then because it had developed a trans leak, needed a brake job and had too many mile on the original timing chain for his peace of mind (126K). He wanted to start overhauling it and life got in the way.

The fuel pump is not working now so I am starting at the gas tank. I am in the process of removing the gas tank from this 1976 450SL. I have removed the steel wall at the back of the trunk in front of the tank. Once that wall is out you can see the tank. I have removed the 5 small diameter braided hoses that go to the plastic vent tank positioned above the gas tank. I have removed the 2 securing bolts on the the left side of the tank and also the 2 securing bolts on the right side. I have removed the fuel line under the car at the fuel pump end but not the other end that threads into the flange part of what looks like the bottom of the gas tank. I am not sure if that flange needs to be or can be removed yet....With all of this done the tank moves a little but generally is still secured somewhere else. I will be removing the Hard top and raising the rag top in the next few days to explore the convertible top well to see what might be still holding this tank in place that can be accessed from that area....let me know if you have the final pieces of this puzzle--to help me out!!!.....thank you, Gary carsmarty@gmail.com

Hello Gary.Have you removed the two gas lines that goes from the gas tank to the engine.look for them ,that could be your solution.
