To check the timing on a 1990 Dodge 318, first ensure the engine is at operating temperature and then turn it off. Remove the timing light’s clamp from the battery and connect the timing light’s inductive pickup to the number one spark plug wire. Start the engine and point the timing light at the timing marks on the harmonic balancer and the timing tab. The timing should be set according to the specifications in the vehicle’s service manual, and if adjustments are needed, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt and turn the distributor slightly.
