Why are VHS tapes obsolete now?

There are no more VHS videos due to the increase in production and popularity of the DVD format of films. Also, downloading is a major factor in the decrease of certain technologies. Why would most people buy a movie if they could just download it for free and burn it to the more convenient format of a DVD?
