'Jerk' has a lot of meanings, most commonly heard among youth to mean idiot, fool, annoying person. Jerk has been used properly since the 1500s to mean a sudden pull or tugging motion. In the early 1800s the Word was applied to railroads (the engine jerks the other cars forward; the water pump jerked water from the pond). In the mid-1800s a tiny town without a water tank for the train was a 'jerkwater town' because the train would have to stop longer to pump water from a stream or pond. People from such villages were called 'jerks' by the carnival and circus workers who were a frequent sight in the mid and late 1800s. Jerk was then applied as a derogatory term for an unsophisticated country person who could easily be cheated.
