What are common causes of premature battery failure on a Ford Windstar?

A bad battery - one of the 'cells' can fail and cause there to be virtually no reserver: need a jump after leaving lights on for just a very short time.

A bad alternator! If the voltage being sent to the battery from the alternator is too high / erratic, it'll drastically shorten the life of the battery.
