Insects (Insecta) is the scientific class of which fireflies (Lampyridae family) are members.

What members of the insect class share is the following:

1. Two antennae;

2. Body division into three segments as head, thorax and abdomen;

3. Three sets of jointed legs;

4. Set of compound eyes; and

5. Skeleton on the outside of the body.

These characteristics are equally descriptive of a firefly or lightning bug. Within the insect class, the firefly or lightning bug is categorized further as one of the beetles. It has two pairs of wings. The lower wings underneath are lighter and used for flying. The upper wings above are harder and used for protection.

In many beetles, the upper wings are very hard. The upper wings of a firefly or lightning bug best may be described as similar to leather in appearance and feel.
