William Still was a prominent African American abolitionist, often referred to as the "Father of the Underground Railroad." He was born in 1821 in New Jersey, but later moved to Philadelphia, where he lived for much of his life. Still was literate and worked as a clerk and later as a prominent agent for the Underground Railroad, helping many escaped slaves reach freedom. He is also known for his detailed records of the individuals he assisted, which contributed to the historical understanding of the Underground Railroad.
