Parrots belong to the phlylum Chordata and class Aves.

There are over 300 varieties of parrots, which are generally known as psittacines. They are separated into 86 genera, which make up the order Psittaciformes. These are then divided into three families:

• Strigopidae (New Zealand parrots)
