Suspense is created when the reader knows what is going to happen, but the characters don't! It's like in a Horror movie, when you are yelling "Don't go in there" to the characters on the screen.
You can also create tension by using short, choppy sentences. Keep things moving. Get the reader wondering. Have them guess about the plot.
Sometimes you can create suspense by having the characters know something that the reader doesn't, but that's harder to write. Mystery stories are good examples of this sort of suspense.
