Explain what will happen to Tom if he loses his appeal?

In "To Kill a Mockingbird," Tom Robinson faced the death penalty if he lost his appeal. Tom was innocent of the crime, but began to lose heart that anyone would view him fairly and acquit him due to his race. As a result, he either panicked and tried to escape in desperation, or simply created a situation where the guards would kill him.
