Density is defined as the mass of an object divided by its volume. Air is comprised of molecules and gaseous compounds floating around, and have a very small mass. And there are a lot of these molecules floating around in a big space (aka the surroundings/atmosphere) so there is a high volume. A small mass divided by a large volume equates to a low density.
