Why are the engines of cars are placed in front instead of back?

Because the boot would be silly at the front

The old Volkswagen Beetle had a rear engine and a trunk in front, so it has been done. Apparently, putting the engine behind the wheel base can cause handling difficulties, so it's a less practical (or safe) configuration than placing the engine in front.
