To reset a cable modem, unplug the power cable for a few moments and plug it back in. If there is a "standby" button on the modem you may need to hit this after plugging it back in, if there is only one light showing for several seconds. Some modems will also have a depressed RESET button that you can push with the help of an unraveled paper clip or ballpoint pen. Hold this button in for 5-10 seconds. This is more frequently found on VOIP or Telephony capable cable modems (these often contain batteries that hold power for hours while the modem is unplugged).
After resetting the modem it is good practice to do the same with a router (if you have one connected) and as well restarting your computer to receive new IP address information and lease.
