Saber-toothed cats, like Smilodon, are estimated to have reached speeds of around 30 to 35 miles per hour (48 to 56 kilometers per hour) in short bursts. However, they were not built for sustained high-speed chases like modern big cats; instead, they relied on ambush tactics and strength to capture prey. Their robust build and powerful limbs were more suited for close-range attacks rather than long-distance running.
