What does restoring do on your iphoe?

Restoring will delete everything on your phone except it's "factory settings" which include serial number, basic programming, and your carrier's plan.

If this is recommended, you don't have to lose your data forever. You just have to make a copy (or backup) of your data either using iCloud or iTunes. You then just place this data back on your phone after the restoration process.
