In Elizabethan times, the education system was not as widespread as it is today. There were relatively few schools, primarily grammar schools, which were established in towns and cities for the education of boys from wealthier families. The number of schools varied, but estimates suggest there were around 300 grammar schools in England by the late 16th century. Education for girls was limited, with some informal learning occurring at home or in small private settings.
