With the explosion of fuel prices all over the world, it is no wonder so many people have scrambled to purchase affordable Chinese made 50cc scooters. The issue with many of these GY6 50cc scooters is that they can often be a little underpowered or lack the necessary speed needed to navigate through traffic. Many aftermarket accessories are available today that are designed to get the most out of these types of scooters.

One of the most popular modifications made to these 50cc Chinese scooters is swapping out the restrictive original equipment engine air filter boxes in favor for a cone type free flowing air filter. The use of a new air filter with a larger main jet for the scooters carburetor can yield significant gains in both power and speed.

Modifications such as tuned exhaust systems can dramatically help the scooter along however the gains can often sacrifice the quietness of the small engine. Tuned exhaust systems may be al little too expensive for the average scooter owner as well.

Many people choose to modify the transmissions of a 50cc Chinese made scooter. One of the easiest ways to do this is to switch out the variator rollers located inside of the transmission. These rollers are identified and sold according to weight. Experimenting with lighter weights can yield faster top end speed while heavier rollers will increase acceleration with a trade off in regards to top end speed.

Many enthusiasts take modifications to the next level by purchasing and installing “big bore kits. These kits consist of a larger engine piston and cylinder while some may include a larger cylinder head with larger valves to help increase engine flow. Sizes of these overbore kits can vary typically from 72cc to a whopping 90cc kit. Reports have shown however that kits larger than 72cc can dramatically shorten the life of the engine. Most states have restrictions when it comes to engine size and the need for a motorcycle endorsement as well as the need for registering and license plating concerning any scooter having an engine displacement larger than 50cc.
