What does the acronym SPEND mean pertaining to IV therapy?

It's what you assess for in relation to an IV site, to determine whether or not it is placed properly or if there is any infection or infiltration (meaning fluid has leaked into the surrounding tissue).

S = swelling

P = pain

E = erythema (redness)

N = non-patency (does it flush?)

D = discharge
