How do you know when your U joints are bad on a Chevy pickup?

Noise for one thing, but to be sure hold the brake and put the vehicle in drive, if you hear a clunk it may be bad, keep switching from reverse to drive to hear it really good, then climb under and try to move the shaft to verify, it should not move side to side.
