Twain was a young man and learned how to work on steamboats. He would measure the water depth and that is where his pen name came from. The measure was called “ Mark Twain” and it isn’t until later he began to write. In the 1850’s he went to th town of Murphy’s in the gold rush territory to run the newspaper. Short stories like the Jumping Frog of Calaveras County were written.
