If it is older and used freon you need be a licensed HVAC technician is licensed to do that.

This is not a typically Do-It-Yourself job.

The refrigerant gas is somewhat dangerous to handle - you could suffocate yourself or someone else in the room - you need to have the right tools and test equipment and must have been trained so that you know what you are doing.

Any appliance that contains refrigerant gas - such as a refrigerator or an air conditioner unit - which has developed a fault must be thoroughly checked by an expert to ensure that a) it is running safely and b) there are no leaks of refrigerant gas.

In many cases you should either call a Licensed Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician to do this job for you. If the refrigerator is older (8 or more years) or the smaller under the counter type - it will likely be better to purchase a new one.
