Erythromycin was discovered in 1952 by Dr. Paul E. Ehrlich and his team, who isolated it from a strain of the bacterium Saccharopolyspora erythraea, formerly known as Streptomyces erythreus. It was developed as an antibiotic to treat bacterial infections, particularly in patients allergic to penicillin. Erythromycin became one of the first widely used macrolide antibiotics and has been instrumental in treating various infections.
