That's a question you should have asked your piercer. Here's the skinny, you want to avoid Dairy products ( milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream, these leave a residue on your tongue that can support bacterial growth ), spicy or hot foods ( hot wings, hot tacos ), The consumption of alcohol should be kept to a minimum, not because of yeast or any such non sense, but because after a few one tends to be brave around friends and you start showing off your tongue ( hyper extending the tongue is a bit rough on the new piercing not to mention the poor old tongue ).

Good things to do: Plenty of Ice, cold stuff helps ease the swelling and makes the whole experience a bit easier to deal with. Freezies, Slushies, Slurpies cold stuff as often as possible. Soups and Sandwiches for the first few days are easier for you to eat and easier on the tongue. In a few days the swelling will go down and you should be able to revert to a more natural diet. Brush your teeth and don't brush your tongue, using a good mouth wash when cleaning the teeth is a good idea but you only need mouth wash once you brush your teeth. Other than that cold bottled water after smoking or eating to swish and swallow works just as well.

Remember in two weeks time you need to get the shorter barbell in the piercing so you don't damage your teeth. So........ That's what you should have been told during your piercing visit, if you weren't told that then, you have been told now. Happy Piercings!!
