The Knights Templar, officially known as the Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, was founded around 1119 in Jerusalem. They were established by a group of French knights, primarily led by Hugh de Payens, to protect Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land after the First Crusade. The order quickly grew in power and influence, becoming a key military and financial institution during the Crusades.
