The title "Decameron" derives from the Greek Words "deka," meaning ten, and "hemera," meaning day. The work, written by Giovanni Boccaccio in the 14th century, features a frame narrative in which ten young people—seven women and three men—flee plague-ridden Florence and retreat to a villa. During their ten-day stay, they take turns telling stories, leading to a total of one hundred tales. The title reflects both the number of storytellers and the duration of their storytelling adventure.
