I got a turtle yesterday with a sample of food but I don't know how to feed it to him can you please help?

Well my friend has a turtle you put the food in the tank or whatever you have and you step away from it because they get really scared of you and they swim away from you but i suggest that you put some food in a bottle cap or something small so the turtle can get into and be able to eat it???
