Which countries are on the waiting list to be a member of the EU?

Croatia has been accepted as a member and will join the European Union on July 1, 2013, becoming the 28th member.

Iceland, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey are candidates for membership, and are undergoing checks for admission. Once cleared, they will become acceding members.

Albania has sent in their application, and once it is reviewed and accepted, will become a candidate.

Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo are potential candidates for the EU. They must send in an application to start the process; however, no applications have been received yet.
