Surprisingly, human deaths from sharks are actually very rare. Only a handful of deaths occur each year. Great whites, tiger sharks and bull sharks have been known to attack people, viewing them as prey. Great whites, in particular, occasionally mistake surfers for seals, as they have a similar outline when viewed from below. Other than those species, the majority of shark attacks result from people provoking that sharks, which then bite in self-defense.

Sharks are killed by humans far more often than humans are killed by sharks.
