How do you get a burn smell out of a house that was partly burned?

some hardware stores carry a special soap to wash the walls with first to remove some of the soot and reidues left behind. hydrocarbons are tough to totally remove though. after washing, a coat of "kilz" primer and paint will usually cover up the problem.
