Cottonmouths, or water moccasins, can hold their breath and stay submerged for about 30 minutes to an hour, although they typically resurface much sooner. Their ability to hold their breath allows them to evade predators and hunt for prey underwater. However, prolonged submersion can be dangerous, as they need to come up for air regularly.
