Why put coins in the bed?

One reason that people sometimes put coins in a bad, usually under the pillow, is when a child loses a tooth. Coins are placed under the pillow, purportedly from the tooth fairy, celebrating this event and theoretically making it less scary for children.

Coins in a bad may also mean nothing more than that someone's change fell out of their pockets while resting on the bed.
