How did dear abby get started?

Dear Abby was started by twin sisters Pauline Esther Friedman and Esther Pauline Lederer in 1956. Esther took over writing the column in 1958 and continued until her death in 2002. The column has since been carried on by her daughter, Jeanne Phillips.
