It must be accessed from inside the tailgate.
Tools needed:
* Screwdriver, medium to large
* 10 mm socket, ratchet wrench, and (nice to have) an extension for the socket
Steps:
1. Open the tailgate and stand beneath it.
2. By hand, pull down (toward the ground) on the covers from the window posts on either side. They should just slide off. They each have three plastic slotted fasteners that hold them in place.
3. By hand, remove the small plastic cover (about 1.25 x 1.5 inches) from the base of the pull-down strap; by sliding it forward real hard to remove it.
4. Use the 10 mm socket wrench to remove the mounting of the pull-down strap. Its mounting bolt can also take a Phillips-head screwdriver, but it was on too tight.
5. Use the screwdriver and your hands to remove the large panel on the back of the tailgate. It is held in place by about 12 plastic snap fasteners. Just pull down on the panel when you can get your fingers behind the edges.
6. After the large panel is off, you will have access to all lights in the tailgate.
7. After you locate the desired light, pull its electrical plug out by using your fingers to pinch or release a snap retainer. It should then slide out easily.
8. By hand, pull out the plastic module that holds the bulb and replace the bulb. The socket (module) needs to be twisted about 90 degrees to pop out. They may be tough to get to turn.
9. Optional: Turn on the vehicle lights and check the bulb to ensure its operation.
10. Reassemble everything in the opposite order. Good luck!
