What happened if you wisdom teeth break during Surgery?

Mine was infected and therefore came apart when they attempted extraction. At that point, they smashed the tooth and took out the fragments in pieces.

Not pretty, but effective. Definitely the reason I was intensely sore immediately after I woke up.
