He could not hear music, in the sense that persons with normal hearing could. He devised a wooden rod that he would attach to the soundboard of the piano, then clench the other end between his teeth - that done, he could feel the vibrations in this head and could hear the music.

It has been said that he could hear normal talking conversations though.
