bebecause we have nothing elce to do with our time than to sit around reading about what is new in the celeb world .. we get so caught up in it all and we buy magz n other rubish to entertain us.. there is no need celebs are people just like everybody elce .. just with a lot more money . ---- We care about celebrities because of psychological socialization. Sociologist Charles Cooleys' "Looking-Glass Self" theory indicates that we view ourselves as we think others view us. The media causes celebrities to be glamorized to the point where we want to be like them. In order for us to be like them, according to Cooley, we must look and behave in a manor that reflects that of those celebrities. Aside from mass media glamorization, deep down most people want the lifestyle of a celebrity because they are rich, beautiful, and popular. Because most people mentally develop with social interaction we seek it in our later life - thus the desire for popularity and acceptance among our peers and cohorts. Erick Erickson was the first sociologist to theorize that our experiences in our younger life, develop who we are in our later life. Modern day sociologist Drew Pinsky calls minors the "sponges of our culture." Most celebrity fixating begins in the years before adulthood. Sociologists and psychologists now know that our behaviors are not developed by biological deterministic factors but by sociological deterministic factors. The sociological deterministic factors that guide our behavior originate from one or all of the agents of socialization: family, school/education, peer/cohort groups, mass media, and work. If one or all of these factors endorse celebrities in manor that portrays them as significant others, then they will be viewed as such by that individual (George Meads' Sociological Deterministic Theory of the Social Self). The reason why we view celebrities to a higher standard then an average everyday person is because we are brought up with that idea placed in our minds as children which then stays in our minds throughout our lives.
