Too many.
The situation has improved in the past few years, as the ndustry creates and supports adoption groups to find homes for greyhounds after their racing careers end. However, not all retired greyhounds are lucky enough to be adopted, and many of the unlucky ones end up being euthanized.
Individuals who wish to help can contact their local greyhound track, as volunteers are welcome. Those able to adopt a greyhound will find that they make Excellent pets. Greyhounds are intelligent, loyal, affectionate, docile dogs. They are not, as a rule, high-strung, as many may think. Greyhounds are Excellent around children. Also, their racing training makes them easy to handle; they are obedient and responsive when around others and when walking on a leash.
