What is the cause of canities?

Canities, commonly known as gray hair, is primarily caused by a reduction in melanin production in hair follicles. This decrease in pigment can result from aging, genetic factors, and sometimes stress or health conditions. As the melanocytes that produce melanin diminish or cease to function, hair loses its color, leading to the appearance of gray or white strands.
