Sir Walter Raleigh was an English statesman, explorer, and writer who lived during the late 16th century and early 17th century. He is best known for popularizing tobacco in England and for his attempts to establish a colony in North America, notably the ill-fated Roanoke Colony. Raleigh was also a favorite of Queen Elizabeth I and played a significant role in court politics. He was eventually imprisoned and executed for alleged treason against King James I.
