In Texas, vessels longer than 39.4 feet are required to have a sound signaling device, such as a whistle or horn, that can produce a sound signal audible for at least one-half nautical mile. Additionally, they must be equipped with a means to signal distress, such as a bell or similar device. The sound signaling device must be easily accessible and operable from the helm.
