Filtering could by defined as the process of removing solid particles from water. This is like passing a liquid through a paper filter. The liquid water passes while bits of dirt, sand, and grass are captured by the filter.
Bacteria can exist in water and not be filtered out by a filter. The bacteria are small enough that standard paper, cloth, and charcol filters would not remove them.
Harmful bateria could be present in water from the presence of corpses or organic waste. Bacteria is also more frequently found when water is still, like in a very small pond or large puddle without movement of water like in creeks or rivers.
Common bacteria in water include coliform and E. Coli. Other contaminants of water include the presence of nitrates and nitrites.
Ponds have water that is still, not moving and flowing, and is more likely to have high concentrations of contaminants. It is most often not safe to drink.
