What does a place value mean?

In the decimal numbering system, where one hundred is written as 100, ten as 10 and one as 1, each digit sits in a place that determines its value. In the written 100, the 1 digit in in the hundreds place, so it represents a value of one hundred. and in 10 the 1 digit is in the place that represents the value ten.
