Why would the inside of your 2002 Subaru Legacy smell like gasoline?

One possibility is that your gas filter was installed backwards. That happened on my sister inlaw's Ford focus. She went to the dealer for a tune up, and smelled gasoline for a couple of months. Later it actually started on fire.
