Why did Festus name his mule Ruth on Gunsmoke?

The mule's name was Ruth. Ruth was a male.

Festus named all of his mules Ruth, whether male or female, in honor of a mule that he loved and that had helped him accomplish a hard task in the middle of battle once, and died for her bravery.
