Baptistin Baille was born in France in 1841. His full name was Jean-Baptiste Baille. His friendship with Paul Cezanne and Emile Zola dates from when the three of them were at Bourbon college - a boarding school in Aix, France.

Their friendship was so close that they became known as "Les triOS inseparables" (the three inseparables). Whilst at college they would often swim together in the River Arc, Provence, France. These recalled images would become the subject of many of Paul Cezanne's paintings of bathers. Emile Zola also referred to their experiences in his fourteenth novel "L'oeuvre" (published in 1886).

Baptistin Baille and Paul Cezanne exchanged letters and remained friends long after their college days. Baptistin Baille became a professor of optics and acoustics at the "École de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles" in Paris. He died in 1918.
