What is the pathology for scabies?

Scabies is caused by the infestation of the skin by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite, which burrows into the epidermis. This leads to a hypersensitivity reaction, resulting in intense itching and inflammation. The mites cause mechanical damage to the skin, and their feces and secretions contribute to the allergic response, leading to secondary bacterial infections. The resultant rash typically appears as small papules, burrows, and excoriations, especially in intertriginous areas.
