In the 19th century, Blacks had field hollers, spirituals, work songs and other ballads. This evolved into Blues in the first half of the 20th century (Robert Johnson) In the 1950's, the Blues evolved into a very popular genre (B.B. King, Muddy Waters) and gave rise to Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues (Soul). These progressed in the 60's, until Funk and Reggae became predominant in the 70's.

With the influence of electronics in music, boogie, electro music and disco became popular in the 70's. In the 70's, black artists combined the music of funk, disco, boogie and electro music, with funk, reggae, soul and spoken-Word of the Blues.

By scratching vinyls (DJ's) and using MC's, Hip Hop was born in the Block Parties of New York City. Old school hip hop was more influenced by R&B, disco and funk, where new school hip hop was more influenced by Rock Music.
