The somewhat old fashioned use of gay to mean light-hearted or cheerful survives in the French language as the Word gai. Ex: le cœur gai, une danse gaie.
The use of the Word gay as a less technical version of the Word homosexual has been borrowed into French. They use the same Word with the same spelling (pronounced the same as gai). Also used in this way is the slang Word homo, which does not necessarily carry the derogatory connotation that it does in English and is freely used by gay people to refer to themselves.
