Does jack Morrison die at the end of ladder 49?

Jack dies because he is trapped where the other firefighters can't get him. Despite the coordinated efforts to rescue him, they are unable to reach him without risking their lives even further. The movie ends with Jack telling Mike to tell Linda that he loves her.
