Where does the optunia cactus come from?

Opuntia is a very wide-spread genus, occurring naturally in the Americas from southern Canada to southern Argentina. The highest number of species are found in the United States and in Mexico. They are most abundant in semi-arid regions, often within and bordering warm desert regions.
